A surprisingly high one in ten Brits have failed to lock their front door during the night or when their home was left without anyone in it, during the last year alone.

The stat comes from Sainsbury's Bank research, which also suggests some 23 per cent have left windows open when no one was at home in the last year and nine per cent have kept conservatory doors unlocked during the night or when the home wasn't occupied.

Nine per cent said that they left the key to their front door hidden in a spot outside the home.

These are all things people should avoid if they want to help their home to stay safe.

On the other hand, things like burglar alarms, security lights and other anti-burglar precautions are a good idea.

Home personal insurance is an important protection for people in the event of things like burglaries.
