Four million Brits going abroad this Christmas and New Year

Close to four million Brits are going to be going overseas this Christmas season, estimates suggest.

This is the number the ABTA has forecast will be heading away between December 20th 2013 and January 3rd 2014. The most busy days for travel are going to be December 20th, 21st and 23rd, it predicts.

Millions are set to head away via major airports in the UK - 1.7 million via Heathrow alone, according to estimates. Some 360,000 will depart through Stansted, around the same number from Manchester and 700,000 from Gatwick, meanwhile.

And 210,000 are going to be taking Eurostar trips through the Channel Tunnel, with Paris the top destination for these travellers.

"As the roads will be busy, ABTA recommends that holidaymakers should leave plenty of time to get to the airport and check for engineering work before heading off if using public transport," advised chief executive of ABTA, Mark Tanzer.

Don't forget to consider your travel personal insurance requirements if you have a Christmas trip coming up!
