With Christmas Day now just a little over a week away, it's the perfect time to take a look at Institute of Advanced Motorists expert Peter Rodger's festive driving tips.

There are both stresses and joys associated with Christmas shopping trips, he has said.

"But getting your car broken into is one [stress] you can avoid by remembering a few festive tips," he went on.

Among his advice on keeping a car safe was to park somewhere open and well lit, with CCTV ideally.

People ought to keep valuables in their car where they can't be seen, and use a steering lock if they have one, he advised.

Drivers were also told to hide traces of the satnav after parking, and check they've locked-up.

The chief examiner added: "The combination of cold weather and the approach of Christmas sends shoppers to local shopping centres and supermarkets. Don’t let your car become a target for thieves while you wander seeking inspiration on what to buy for someone."
